Since the brutal war against Syria, the media has been publishing statements by the Turkish president about establishing a safe zone in northern Syria.
Faraan: Turkey’s new position on the safe zone is related to Erdogan’s greed and the type of agreement or disagreement with the Americans.
This explains the American movement towards areas controlled by Turkish forces and their allies in northern Syria before Erdogan announced the impending military operation, as US officers have reportedly met with Turkish officers several times in northern Syria, such as Aleppo has convened to discuss various issues.
At the political level, the US-Turkish consultations on Syria continue within the framework of the US-Turkey strategic mechanism for strengthening bilateral cooperation, even at the level of foreign ministers. During Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu’s meeting with his US counterpart Anthony Blinken in New York, Turkey’s plans for a new invasion of Syria and the creation of a so-called safe zone were discussed.
Political pundits believe that the new position of Turkey and the United States on the establishment of a safe zone in Syria is an action by both countries to measure the reaction of Russia and the Syrian government to this issue. This is because neither the United States is willing to sacrifice Qasd for the sake of Turkey, nor is Turkey willing to give up its organized terrorism in Syria, especially given the global involvement in the Ukraine war. Nevertheless, the fact is that with this move, Erdogan wants to prove to the world his imaginary ability to create a safe zone in northern Syria.
So is Erdogan’s move at the cost of lifting sanctions on the Turkish-controlled areas of northern Syria and trying to realize the illusion of a safe haven in exchange for a US-Turkish understanding of Russia’s war on Ukraine and some NATO membership, especially after Turkey’s approach to Russia is aimed at reducing tensions in US-Turkish relations and to try to open closed doors between Erdogan and Biden.
Of course, Erdogan Erdogan is well aware that his agreement with the United States to invade Syria is nothing more than a political illusion and cannot be fruitful for him in the upcoming Turkish elections and he will not be able to engage with Russia, Iran and Syria even with the help from the US.
