How and where will the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia take the region?

FARAAN: Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart that the return of Saudi-Iranian relations to normal is the main issue and expressed hope that this issue will have positive effects on the region and the Islamic world.

Analysis:

Wissam Ismail, a professor of international relations, believes that the Saudi Foreign Minister’s visit to Iran is the beginning of a completely different phase from the previous one, which is the 8-year break in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He asserts: “The most important point in Faisal Farhan’s trip to Iran is the strategic view of both sides. This new move by Saudi Arabia shows a change in the country’s policy, especially since this trip takes place less than 10 days after US Secretary of State Blinken’s visit to Saudi Arabia. And as we know, America always considers Iran a threat to the security and stability of the region and puts pressure on the countries of the region to deal with this country.”

This expert notes that the Saudi Foreign Minister’s visit to Iran shows that Riyadh is determined to continue moving towards regional cooperation policy. A move that has no result other than regional agreements and ultimately strengthening stability and peace and defeating America’s plans in the region.

Saudi writer and political analyst Saad bin Omar also believes that the Saudi Foreign Minister’s visit to Iran is aimed at securing the interests of both countries.
He considers the media discourse and propaganda of America and “Israel” about this trip to be an old trick that has no effect on the interests of Iran and Saudi Arabia.
He goes on to say that the most important of all, this trip in itself complements the diplomatic efforts and the invitation of King Salman, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, to Ibrahim Raisi, the President of Iran, to visit Riyadh.

Mehdi Azizi, an expert on international issues, also believes that Bin Farhan’s trip to Tehran and the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia is the beginning of a new chapter between the country and the product of regional conditions. After the agreement between the two countries, in a situation where we are witnessing the growing weakness of America in the region and Biden’s trip to the region a few months ago and Blinken’s recent trip to Riyadh to prevent the agreement between the two countries also failed, it is time to try to bring more perspectives of Iran and other Arab countries in the region.

Referring to the fear of “Israel” and the United States about the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, this expert says that this agreement will affect other regional cases, including the case of Yemen and Palestine.
He notes that in their press conference, the two sides emphasized the need to strengthen relations and economic cooperation between the two countries and security cooperation, especially in the field of maritime security and the Palestinian issue.
