Israeli Minister of Energy, Karen Al-Harrar, has called for cancelling a deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to transport Emirati crude oil via Israel to Europe, citing environmental risks, according to local media on Tuesday.
Faraan: “This agreement must be canceled, it has no any advantage for the State of Israel,” Al-Harar told Israel’s Army Radio. “The environmental risks are already severe enough.”
Israeli environmental activists had previously protested against the Israeli-UAE deal demanding its cancellation.
In October 2020, Israeli state firm Europe Asia Pipeline Co (EAPC) and UAE-based MED-RED Land Bridge Ltd signed an agreement to transport crude oil and fuel from the Gulf to Western markets via a pipeline between Eilat on the Red Sea and the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon.
At the time, the Israeli economic newspaper Globes said that exporting oil to Europe through a land pipeline linking Israel and the Persian Gulf states will help bypass the shipping routes of the Strait of Hormuz and the Suez Canal.
