Faraan: While the new round of talks of lifting sanctions against Iran resumed in Vienna after a five-month hiatus, many experts believe that developments in the West Asian region could affect the talks, and if the two sides return to full compliance with the nuclear deal, there would be a wave of significant developments.
Canadian journalist and political expert Eric Walberg talked about the US government’s approach in Vienna, saying that “Biden’s continuation of Trump’s policy to isolate and threaten Iran is shameful. He was elected with the promise to restore the JCPOA and didn’t.”
“Iran has been negotiating ‘in good faith’ but there has been none of that on the US part. Instead, the US has been trying to change the original agreement to try to get Iran to give up its weapons of self-defense, even as US ally Israel threatens to attack Iran, with Biden saying ‘all options are on the table’. That is, Israel can do whatever it likes,” the Canadian expert added.
Walberg then talked about regional conflicts in West Asia as well as in North Africa, stressing that this is the desired situation for Zionists. “Sudan and Ethiopia are descending into civil war, abetted by US-Israel. Yemen continues to be bombed by Saudi Arabia, with US support. Israel is delighted: Muslims killing Muslims. Again, despite Biden’s vow to end support for Saudi crimes against humanity. Afghanistan was destroyed and then abandoned.”
“How all this will affect negotiations with Iran is hard to tell. The US is essentially at war with all but western Europe and Israel, so perhaps Biden will surprise everyone and actually ‘negotiate in good faith. That would be the logical thing to do to improve the US image abroad,” he said.
Referring to the role of Iran in the recent regional developments, Eric Walberg noted that “Iran has a key role to play in helping Afghanistan and Yemen heal. But allowing Iran to play its role in the region is not what US-Israel wants. Israel wants a return to the days of the Shah when Iran was the center for Middle East espionage in the service of US-Israel.”
