FARAAN: An American Republican senator has made a claim about the progress of Iran’s nuclear program, stating that the “failure” of the Biden administration is the reason behind it.
Lindsey Graham, an American Republican senator, reiterated the US’s claim that Iran’s nuclear program has military objectives, saying that the “failure” of US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris could lead to Iran producing nuclear weapons in the months leading up to the 2024 US presidential election. Fox News reported that Graham, in an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation” program, said that the US Senate received a “stunning” report from the Director of National Intelligence last week regarding the status of Iran’s nuclear program.
Graham’s strange claim comes as Iranian officials have emphasized that the production and use of nuclear weapons have no place in Iran’s defense program and that the nature of Iran’s nuclear program is purely peaceful. Furthermore, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has imposed some of the strictest inspection and verification measures on Iran’s nuclear program. Iran is fulfilling its commitments under agreements with the IAEA, and its interaction with the agency continues.
However, Graham said, “What I am worried about is a quick move towards a nuclear weapon. I am very concerned that not only a second front (in the Israel war) will open, but they will use these three to four months before the election to move quickly towards a nuclear weapon, and we need to warn them. This should not happen.” Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Iran might produce enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon “within one to two weeks.”
While Blinken attributed the rapid progress of nuclear activities to the ineffectiveness of the nuclear agreement (JCPOA), Graham pointed to the performance of Biden and Harris.
In the past two weeks, Biden, following much criticism of his weak performance against former President Donald Trump and Republican candidate in the 2024 US elections, withdrew and endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement, supporting her. Harris has officially become the Democratic Party’s candidate for the US presidential election scheduled for November.
Graham, stating that Biden and Harris have been a “great failure” in controlling Iran, added that the Zionist regime is paying the price for it. The US claims that Iran provides financial and military support to regional resistance groups, including Hamas, and controls their actions. Hamas, following the “Al-Aqsa Storm” operation on October 7, which initiated the Gaza war and retaliatory attacks by the Zionist regime, has been resisting for over nine months. Iranian officials, supporting the liberation aspirations of regional resistance groups, including Hamas, have rejected this US claim.
Continuing his anti-Iranian remarks, Graham said that if Iran is not warned and held accountable for the attacks on the Zionist regime by Hezbollah, they (Hezbollah) will continue targeting the occupied territories. He also made warlike statements against Iran, saying, “So, as long as the Iranians do not believe that they will be attacked and we have their oil refineries on the target list, we will see more of these things as far as Iran is concerned.”
