Yemen promises to intensify operation after Abu Dhabi, Dubai attacks

Yemen threatened to ramp up attacks on the United Arab Emirates on Monday after the UAE said it shot down two ballistic missiles over Abu Dhabi, the second assault in a week.

Faraan: Yemeni forces also fired a missile into southern Saudi Arabia, wounding two people, where another projectile was destroyed, AFP reported.

The Yemeni military said they targeted Abu Dhabi’s al-Dhafra air base with Zulfiqar ballistic missiles as well as “vital and important” locations in the Dubai area with drones.

The attack “achieved its objectives with high accuracy”, Yemeni military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a televised statement.

“We advise foreign companies and investors in the UAE to leave as it has become unsafe,” Saree said.

“We are ready to expand the operation during the next phase and confront escalation with escalation,” he added.

The US Embassy, in a rare security advisory for the UAE, on Monday urged its citizens to “maintain a high level of security awareness”.

James Swanston of Capital Economics said further attacks could unnerve tourists planning trips to the UAE, and that any major hit on the OPEC member state’s oil production facilities would pose a downside risk to GDP growth, Reuters wrote.

The UAE’s authorities said they intercepted two missiles over Abu Dhabi, scattering debris over the city. They did not report any attack on Dubai.

Monday’s attack was the second on UAE soil since last week’s strike that hit a fuel depot in Abu Dhabi, killing three people, and causing a fire near its international airport.

Last week’s attack prompted a volley of deadly air strikes on Yemen, where the UAE is part of the Saudi-led coalition waging a seven-year war.

One of the raids leveled a prison in Saada, killing at least 87 people and wounded more than 260 others.

It drew international condemnations including from Iran, the United Nations, and aid organizations.
